Suite N°1

In 2013, L’Encyclopédie de la parole initiated a cycle of four "Choral Suites" all based on the same principle: the live reproduction of documents taken from the Encyclopédie de la parole's audio collection.

Suite n°1 inaugurates a series of choral suites and enables us to hear a different part of the Encyclopédie de la parole’s collection allowing to explore several dimensions of sound restitution, such as unison, superposition, vocal counterpoint and musical harmony. The orchestration effect of this virtuoso choir is the dissolution of the individual, making way for the true character of the piece: the spoken word.

By experiencing situations which have nothing to do with each other, by combining contrasting modes of speaking, ordinary or unique, the piece brings into existence a sort of empirical grammar of our common orality : the abc’s, the babbling, the blabla, the hubbub, the basic vocabulary, the joy of talking for the sake of talking, the game of translation and the pleasure of languages that we don’t understand.

This ABC of the ordinary spoken word was re-created in 2020 for the Festival d’Automne with fourteen students from the Asnières studio-théâtre, along with  seven actors from the original cast and the choir leader, Nicolas Rollet.
